There is a new market growing the IOT, the Internet of Things, more than 9,000 million of these devices powered by MCUs, micro controllers, are built and deployed every year, which is why Open Source companies have deployed their solution like Ubuntu Core, market in which Microsoft until now has no presence in the IOT, the internet of things.
 What is IOT
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the constant trend of connecting all kinds of physical objects to the Internet,

The problem with these devices is security, as people with livelihoods think their data is at risk, for example the Mirai botnet attack in 2016 where approximately 100,000 compromised IoT devices were reused by hackers. MIcosoft declares

We identified the need for a reliable hardware base to protect and defend software on a device. We identified the need for multiple layers of defense depth, in both hardware and software, to repel hackers even if they completely breach a security layer. We identified the critical need for hardware, software, and cloud to work together to secure a device. Over time, the seven properties gained strength and became the foundation of a movement within Microsoft, ultimately leading to the present.

Well for this scenario is that Microsoft created Azure Sphere a proprietary or quasi-proprietary solution using a distribution with Linux kernel, the reasons why using Linux and not Windows, is for the advantages of Linux, especially security.
Well Azure Sphere is a system that consists of 3 parts, a solution for creating highly secure MCU devices connected to the Internet that consists of three base components:

Azure Sphere Certified Microcontrollers (MCU), a new type of chip that combines real-time application processing with connectivity and security developed by Microsoft that stems, among other things, from the company’s experiences with Xbox.

Azure Sphere OS, a new operating system designed according to the aforementioned layered protection, based on the advances of Microsoft and built with «a custom Linux kernel to create a highly secure software environment and a reliable platform for new experiences of IoT ».

Azure Sphere security service, a cloud service dedicated to the protection of devices that make use of Azure Sphere which includes protection measures «from device to device and from device to cloud through certificate-based authentication, detection security threats and software updates.
